Despite the competence was tight, Matti Lehikoinen from Finland was the athlete that made the best time taking the gold to his home. Mauricio Estrada from Colombia got the second place and Antonio Leiva from Chile got the third. Saturday, November 11th, was a historic day for the Peruvian sports scene. The beautiful city of Cusco, well known because of its great tourist attractive, was the scenery of this urban mountain bike competence. The stairs of San Marcos (near the Cristo Blanco esplanade) were the start line for the 24 professional bikers that came from Bolivia, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Chile, Peru, Mexico, USA, Italy and Finland, and participated in the Red Bull Empire Rider. The presence of these stars of the Latin American and worldwide mountain bike downhill, added to the adrenaline of this sport and a really demanding circuit, were the ingredients to make this competence one of the toughest of the continent. The competence was awesome, super cool. It was a very tough race. The altitude made things complicated for me. Physically and technically really hard, but perfect to finish the season, said a stocked Matti Lehikoinen. An impacting circuit After several months of planning that included national qualifiers in every country that participate to choose their representatives on Friday, November 10th, the 1.5 kilometers circuit from the stairs of San Marcos down to the San Blas main square was ready to be tried for the first time by the 31 competitors. The main obstacles were offered by the geography of the place: really steep stairs, narrow streets, and pronounced curves were very demanding zones of the circuit. But the big drop at the middle of the track, and the ramps and balances implemented by the organizers were the toughest obstacles to face. The practice rounds were complicated. The difficulty of the circuit made some of the competitors to suffer accidents when they tried to over pass some of the hardest obstacles. Anthony Alvarez from Venezuela had an accident, breaking his clavicle and his wrist. Also, Alejandro Paz, the Peruvian mountain bike downhill champion, suffered a fall and damaged his knee. None of them could compete in the final. But the rest didnt stop. This competence gave me a lot of experience because I competed with the Latin American and world champions. I learned a lot, said Sebastin Reategui, the Peruvian that had the best time. The big day On Saturday 11th, the sun was shining. The big day finally arrived. The practice round started at 8:30 a.m. At 10:00a.m., 24 from the 31 competitors the others didnt attend to the race because they had problems during the practice rounds- started the qualifier round that would define the start position of the riders in the final round. With all the adrenaline, Mauricio Estrada from Colombia made the best time (1:36:36), followed by Matti Lehikoinen from Finland (1:37:62) and Alan Beggin from Italy (1:38:54). The final race started at 11:30 a.m. Without breathing, with great courage and at high speeds, the athletes threw themselves to the stairs of San Marcos, decided to occupy one of the podium places. The times of the downhill riders were tight and, despite the falls, all of them showed a great talent when they over passed the obstacles of the circuit. The final was tight. The third place was for Antonio Leiva from Chile (1:34:88), passed by Mauricio Estrada from Colombia (1:34:60). But it was Matti Lehikoinen from Finland (1:32:17) who took the gold home and was crowned as the Emperor of the MTB Downhill winning a great prize of $3000. The circuit was very technical and combined with the altitude of Cusco made this competence a very tough one, confessed the Colombian Estrada. I am very happy with my second place because the best riders from Latin America and the world participated in this race. Finally, although not everyone could take a prize home, the riders lived a unique professional experience in Cusco facing to the best athletes of Latin America and big figures of the worlds mountain bike scene, over passing one of the most difficult urban circuits in the whole world.
